Experience

I began tutoring math in my early 30s, though my mother modeled it in my teens, as a former math and Latin teacher. Because I was already doing my clinical Psych MA, I knew how to get to the emotional source of a student's subject problems in the first hour (usually a past failure-hurt). Emotional respect and interest in her/his interests would lead to teamwork and mutual enjoyment of success. I've since tutored during 6 yrs Grade 6-12 and 26 years college teaching. My most recent 2.5yr Ghanaian-American tutoree studied envi-ronmental engineering online: German1,2,3, then Business Engl, Speech, and on to Chemistry, Precalculus & Calculus, Environ-mental Science, Climate Change & African Studies--along w editorial help on social science & engineering papers and prep for standardized tests, including some prep outside of tutoring hrs. I enjoyed guiding him through so many aspects of his training. I got to advise, know & teach him more broadly & deeply than any other teacher in either high school or college. I love tutoring because I get to exercise both my mind and my heart. I'd like to support other students through HS &/or college, since this activates both my teaching & counseling skills & my enjoyment of knowledge in an ideal relaxed setting. Professionally, I'm writing Psych books, foremost "The Emotional Dynamics of Love: Psychology, Neuroscience & the Experience" with a neuroscientist coauthor. I'm also building a dream book to show sophisticated technique & unconscious wisdom for growing through our losses. After the Love book's published I'll return to graduate Psychology teaching of this new knowledge. Mean-while I enjoy exercising my craft to keep my brain sharp, which has already included learning climate change science with my engineering student. My SAT verbal/math scores went up from 1400+ in my 2nd HSyr to 789math & 715verbal early in 3rd (& final) year. I was near the top in LA County in an advanced Chemistry test too. I took 4 semesters of HS & coll math by exam & much later Statistics for Social Scientific research for my psych (2nd) doctoral research in 1996-9.

Hobbies

My primary interests outside of teaching, writing, counseling, dream interpretation and taking care of my wife and daughter are outdoors adventures through hiking, canoeing and kayaking, physical conditioning through workouts at the YMCA, and playing, singing and composing for voices at the piano or guitar--as well as playing by ear & improvising. I've led many hikes, in HS, grad school, as a professor & a HS teacher. I used to play chess, checkers and cards. I like to discuss current issues and listen with curiosity to grasp how another person has come to her or his views, because I want to understand our common nature. I also like to "read" TV and movies to figure out their moral messages, values and meanings.
